The art of scientific writing: scientific papers and grant applications

Venue

Villa Orlandi, Anacapri (NA).

Objective

To provide young researchers with the basic theoretical and practical fundamentals of the difficult art of writing scientific papers and grant applications.

Tools

The objective will be pursued through lectures by keynote speakers, interactive activities and practical exercises on the topic of scientific writing. The lectures will be aimed at framing the problem, defining the main methodologies and techniques for proper and effective scientific writing, and the best iconographic strategies to use in communicating one's findings. The exercises will consist of writing short texts (i.e., the abstract of a scientific paper) and preparing a Letter of Intent (LOI) for a grant application. The texts will be discussed with all participants by speakers and other professionals.

Participation

Membership in the course activities, open to a maximum of 20 early career researchers (Ph.D. students and junior postdocs) includes a contribution of €400 to partially cover expenses. The participation fee includes lunches and coffee breaks, accommodation in single rooms with breakfast at the Hotel San Michele in Anacapri for the nights of May 6, 7 and 8, 2024, and the social dinner on the evening of May 8.

The application, accompanied by a brief CV (max 2000 characters) should be submitted exclusively online through this website from March 8 to March 29, 2024. For scheduling reasons, no extensions to the deadline will be granted. Should applications exceed the number of available places, the organizers will make their selection, taking into account age and CV of the applicants and plurality of the applicants’ laboratories. Researchers admitted to the course will be notified by April 6 along with the arrangements for advance payment of the participation fee.

Two travel grants in the amount of 500 euros each are made available. To participate in the award, a motivational letter justifying the request must be sent to segretario@fisiologiaitaliana.org. Grant notification will be communicated by April 20.
